RAMACHARITRAMANAS A POEM BY TULSIDAS

The **Ramcharitmanas** is one of the most important and revered texts in Hinduism, written by the 16th-century saint-poet **Tulsidas**. It is a retelling of the ancient Indian epic **Ramayana**, which narrates the life, virtues, and adventures of **Lord Rama**, an incarnation of the god Vishnu. Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas in **Awadhi**, a dialect of Hindi, making it more accessible to the common people of northern India at the time, as opposed to the original Sanskrit version of the Ramayana attributed to the sage **Valmiki**.

### Structure and Content:
The Ramcharitmanas is divided into **seven Kands** (books or sections), each of which deals with different stages of Lord Rama’s life:

1. **Bal Kand**: The childhood and birth of Lord Rama, his marriage to Sita, and his early life in Ayodhya.
2. **Ayodhya Kand**: The exile of Lord Rama to the forest, the banishment of Sita, and the events leading to his departure from the kingdom.
3. **Aranya Kand**: Rama's life in the forest, his encounters with demons, and the abduction of Sita by the demon king **Ravana**.
4. **Kishkindha Kand**: The search for Sita, the alliance with the monkey king **Sugriva**, and the story of the building of the bridge to Lanka.
5. **Sundar Kand**: The heroic exploits of **Hanuman**, the monkey god, as he crosses the ocean to reach Lanka, finds Sita, and delivers Rama's message.
6. **Yuddha Kand**: The great battle between Rama’s army and Ravana’s forces, culminating in the defeat of Ravana and the rescue of Sita.
7. **Uttar Kand**: The return of Rama to Ayodhya, his coronation as king, the trial of Sita, and the final resolution of the story.

### Themes:
The Ramcharitmanas emphasizes the ideals of **dharma** (righteousness), **bhakti** (devotion), and **karma** (action) through the characters of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman, and others. It portrays Lord Rama as the ideal human being (Maryada Purushottama), who exemplifies qualities like truthfulness, loyalty, bravery, and compassion.

The text also highlights the importance of divine grace and the power of devotion to God. The devotion to Lord Rama, as seen in the characters like Hanuman and Sita, is a central theme throughout the work.

### Language and Style:
Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas is known for its **poetic beauty** and **melodic verses**, with many couplets and stanzas that are easy to memorize. The work is composed in a style that combines **Kavya** (classical poetry) with devotional hymns, making it both a literary masterpiece and a spiritual guide.

### Popularity and Influence:
The Ramcharitmanas has had a profound influence on the culture, art, and spirituality of India. It is frequently recited in temples, homes, and during religious festivals like **Ram Navami** (the birth of Lord Rama) and **Diwali** (which celebrates Rama's return to Ayodhya after his victory over Ravana). The text has also inspired numerous commentaries, adaptations, and musical compositions.

Tulsidas’s work is not only an epic tale but also a spiritual manual for living a life of virtue and devotion. Its reach extends beyond literature to influence music, dance, and drama, and it remains one of the most significant texts in the religious life of millions of Hindus.
